Sleep Center

The Importance of a Good Night's Sleep

Sleep is not merely "time out" from daily life. It is an active state essential for physical and mental restoration. Most people take it for granted. Normal sleep helps to restore mental and physical energy. It is a natural part of daily living. Yet more than 100 million American of all ages, and as many as one in two people over age 65 regularly fail to get a good night's sleep. They have trouble falling asleep or they wake up too early in the morning.

Although many people experience occasional trouble with sleeping, if the problem is severe or persistent, it may require medical attention.

Treatment at the Sleep Center

Patients are referred to the MedStar Harbor Hospital Sleep Center, an accredited member of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, by their primary care physician or a specialist. Our sleep lab provides privacy and comfort in a hotel-setting. Patients may bring sleeping attire and their own pillows, if desired.

During the sleep study, painless electrodes and other monitoring devices are attached to the scalp, face and limbs to measure and record breathing, body functions and sleeping patterns. The center is staffed by registered polysomonographic technologists with many years of experience who conduct the sleep studies. All results are evaluated by a physician who is board certified in sleep medicine.

Our Sleep Center does have a missed appointments policy. If you need to re-schedule an appointment, we require 24 hours notice. In such a case, please call our office and arrange for a make-up appointment with our receptionist. In an instance of a cancellation without 24 hours notice or no-show to a scheduled appointment, we reserve the right to charge you a $25 fee.

Call 410-350-3538 to speak with a specialist.
