Exceptional Care, One Person at a Time

MedStar Harbor Hospital is committed to exceptional care with a personal touch. We have designed our Cancer Center so that patients can access information, testing and cancer specialists within steps of one another in a beautiful and calming waterfront facility.

Outstanding physicians—trusted and respected among colleagues in their field—offer collaborative and innovative procedures. Accredited by the American College of Surgeons, cancer care at MedStar Harbor is comprehensive and individualized. Our community-hospital program provides complete diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation and support to patients and their loved ones.

With a focus on individualized care, our services include:

  • Colon Cancer

Research shows that diets high in fat and low in fiber may increase the risk of colorectal cancer, especially among people aged 50 and older. When colorectal cancer is detected early, the five-year survival rate is 90 percent. Our team of oncologists and gastroenterologists work together to develop a personalized treatment plan.
  • Lung Cancer

Of all diagnosed cases of lung cancer, 87 percent are smoking-related. The most important factor in preventing lung cancer is to quit smoking or never start. The key to successful lung cancer treatment is early, accurate diagnosis and compassionate care—key elements of the MedStar Harbor approach. Our team of lung cancer specialists and chest surgeons practice an all-inclusive, multi-disciplinary approach to early detection and diagnosis. We offer up-to-the-minute, innovative treatment of lung cancer.
  • Esophageal Cancer

The exact causes of esophageal cancer are unknown. However, the best ways to prevent esophageal cancer are to quit using tobacco or never start, limit the use of alcohol and get regular checkups with your physician. As with all cancers, early detection is the key to successful treatment of esophageal cancer.
  • Breast Cancer

One in nine women in the U.S. will develop breast cancer, and nearly 90 percent of women whose breast cancer is detected early survive. Women over age 40 should schedule mammograms every one to two years and annual exams starting at age 50. The MedStar Harbor Cancer Center offers comprehensive breast services to women of all ages. From advanced, complete diagnostic procedures and surgery to breast reconstruction, our expert staff understands the unique needs of women with breast cancer. We also offer the Penguin Cold Cap —an efficient method of reducing hair loss. Cold cap treatment involves the continuous application of cooled caps before, during and after chemotherapy. MedStar Harbor Hospital has the only team of oncologists in the area offering this innovative treatment.
  • Prostate Cancer

Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in men. However, if detected early, prostate cancer is one of the most successfully treated cancers. Our oncologists, urologists and surgeons are fully trained in the most advanced techniques.
  • Gynecological Cancer

We treat the full range of gynecological cancers and offer reconstructive surgery to women who have undergone such extensive procedures as removal of the vagina, bladder or rectum. Pelvic reconstructive procedures also benefit many female patients with non-malignant conditions, including vaginal prolapse, organ prolapse, or urinary stress incontinence. Monthly gynecologic conferences keep all staff updated on the latest technology and expertise.
  • Rehabilitation Services

Our Rehabilitation Services team provides treatment for patients with lung disease in our pulmonary rehabilitation outpatient program. This program enables pre– and post–lung cancer surgery and lung transplant patients to regain their strength and endurance while breathing easier. We also have services to address the needs of lymphedema patients who may be seen following radiation treatments or after such surgeries as mastectomy, lumpectomy or surgery in the lymph node region.
