BALTIMORE—
Harbor Hospital will be kicking off the second season of our community Farmers Market on Thursday, April 28 at noon in our south parking lot at the intersection of South Hanover Street and Reedbird Avenue. In an effort to encourage healthy decisions in a community with limited local options, Harbor Hospital is providing our neighbors, patients and associates with a variety of fresh produce, sold by local farmers right on the hospital’s waterfront grounds.

Shoppers can choose from a wide selection of items including fresh broccoli, collard greens, kale, cauliflower, apples, peaches, tomatoes and peppers. Featured vendors for 2011 include: 5 Seeds Farm; Black Sauce Kitchen; Hawks Hill Creamery; Healing Fields Whole Body Care; IcedGems; Infused Spreads; Joyce’s Herbs and Flowers; Mari’s Bakery; Marty’s Snack Foods; Morrison; and Tuckey's Mountain Grown Berries, Fruits and Vegetables.

Harbor Hospital is proud to be part of a community cooperative working to provide healthier food options in an area with limited access to fresh produce. The shortage of supermarkets in neighboring communities may cause local residents to opt for unhealthy options, an occurrence that is closely correlated with diet-related diseases such as obesity and diabetes.

Other programs are being offered locally to help improve the community’s access to fresh and healthier options as well. For example, the Cherry Hill community has started a neighborhood garden, and the Baltimore City Health Department has partnered with Santoni’s Marketplace to offer the Cherry Hill BaltiMarket, a virtual supermarket that delivers groceries weekly, as a new healthy food resource.

The 2011 Harbor Hospital Farmers Market will be held from noon to 4 p.m. on the fourth Thursday of each month, until October.

For more than a century, Harbor Hospital has grown alongside the communities it serves in Baltimore City, and Anne Arundel, Baltimore and Howard counties. The hospital was first established in 1903 as a small community clinic servicing the waterfront community in Baltimore. More than 100 years later, the 193-bed hospital continues to offer the personal touch of a community hospital while incorporating the excellence of a high technology medical center. It has been the recipient of the Delmarva Foundation’s highest honor, the Excellence Award for Quality for Hospitals, in 2001, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2010.

With more than 500 physicians representing 30 medical and surgical specialties, and more than 1,500 employees, the hospital offers a full range of health care services for patients from infancy through the senior years. Harbor Hospital’s specialty areas include orthopaedics, women’s services, cancer care, diabetes care, fetal assessment, cardio-pulmonary rehabilitation, and treatment of chronic lung conditions. The hospital’s continuum of care also includes wellness programs, outpatient services and inpatient treatment.

Harbor Hospital is a member of MedStar Health, a not-for-profit, community-based network of nine hospitals and other healthcare services serving Maryland and the Washington, D.C., region. MedStar Health is the largest healthcare system and one of the largest employers in the region with 26,000 associates and 5,300 affiliated physicians.
