BALTIMORE—June 27, 2007—Harbor Hospital recently was awarded a grant from the American Cancer Society to promote awareness of prostate cancer. The funding will be used to educate and screen African American men living in communities served by Harbor Hospital.
According to the Society’s 2006 Facts and Figures, the incidence of prostate cancer in African American men in Baltimore City is the highest among Maryland counties. Using this grant funding, Harbor Hospital will create a targeted campaign to raise community awareness and educate local medical providers on prostate cancer early detection and prevention.
“We are so pleased to be partnering with the American Cancer Society on this important initiative,” said Jean F. Bunker, assistant vice president of marketing and community relations for Harbor Hospital. “We always are looking for ways that we can take action in the fight against cancer, especially when we are helping those who are in the communities we serve.”
This grant is part of the American Cancer Society Targeted Community Investment Grant Program that financially supports state, regional and local projects consistent with the Society’s fight against cancer.
“Local organizations know the situations in their communities and often recognize the best way to address the issue,” said Patricia P. Hoge, RN, PhD, chief mission officer for the American Cancer Society. “The Society is here to complement that work.”
