Help for Common Embarrassing Condition
an article from the Fall 2008 issue of…
Many women experience urinary incontinence, the leaking of urine, on a daily basis. This disorder can be uncomfortable and embarrassing, and can keep women from enjoying their usual activities. Coughing, laughing — even walking — can trigger an involuntary release of urine.
Pregnancy, childbirth, menopause and the structure of the female anatomy are a few of the reasons women experience urinary incontinence more than men do. "Since urinary incontinence tends to increase with age, we are seeing more women with this condition as the general female population ages," said Adegboyega Adejana, M.D., an OB/GYN at Harbor Hospital.
Kegel exercises are one way to help strengthen the bladder muscles to prevent urinary incontinence:
- Identify your pelvic floor muscles by stopping your urine midstream and then allowing it to flow again.
- Tighten your pelvic floor muscles for three seconds and then relax them for three seconds.
- Repeat Kegel exercises 10 to 15 times per session, about three to four times per day.
Kegel exercises can be performed anywhere and no one will know you are doing them. Working at your desk, driving and sitting on the sofa are all great times to do Kegel exercises.
While many women can find improvement without surgical intervention, surgery may be necessary for more extreme cases of urinary incontinence. It is best to discuss an appropriate treatment plan with your physician.
