Residency Programs

Harbor Hospital's residency programs have five-year full accreditation with commendation by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education.

Harbor's Categorical Internal Medicine residents score in the top ten percent on standardized tests of medical knowledge and are consistent top performers in the city-wide doctors' dilemma competition in Baltimore. They have a 100 percent pass rate on the ABIM for the past ten out of twelve years.

Our Transitional Year and Preliminary Internal Medicine residents have gone on to prestigious residencies in ophthalmology, radiology, anesthesiology, dermatology, physical medicine and rehabilitation, and neurology throughout the United States.

The programs provide a wide variety of ambulatory as well as inpatient experiences for doctors in a collegial atmosphere by the Chesapeake Bay. Harbor has more than 30 full-time and 80 volunteer faculty, representing all subspecialties in internal medicine, as well as radiology, surgery, anesthesiology, obstetrics/gynecology, pathology, and pediatrics.

A Regional Presence

For the past century, Harbor Hospital has grown alongside the community we serve, which includes Baltimore, Anne Arundel, and Howard counties. First established in 1901 as the South Baltimore Eye, Ear and Throat Clinic, we continue to offer the personal touch of a community hospital with the services of a high technology medical center. In 1996, we became part of Helix Health, the region's most innovative health care network.

Helix merged with Medlantic Healthcare Group in 1998 and in 1999 was renamed MedStar Health. MedStar Health is among the top 20 not-for-profit health systems in the country. It consists of community-based hospitals and a wide range of health care services, facilities and primary care centers throughout the Baltimore-Washington area.

This network affiliation brings us solid financial backing that allows us to remain at the forefront of health care, adding new equipment, updating facilities and promoting high tech, high touch care.

In 2006, 2007 and 2008 Harbor Hospital was the winner of the Excellence Award for Quality for Hospitals. Harbor Hospital was designated as a stroke center by MIEMSS and certified as a stroke center by The Joint Commission in 2007 and recertified in 2009.
