Total Joint Education Program

Patients scheduled for joint replacement complete a pre-operative education program at the hospital. The two-hour program provides important information on the procedure, what to expect during the hospital stay and postoperative recovery and how to manage pain and discomfort after the surgery.

During the class, you will learn how to perform daily tasks at home with a new knee or hip. You also will learn about the exercises you will need to do to gain strength and mobility in your new joint. It is helpful to practice these exercises during daily tasks, such as getting dressed, sitting or standing, using the stairs and going to the bathroom, before you have the surgery.

Another important component of the course is planning for your aftercare. You and your case manager will discuss the types of care and services you may need after hospitalization. While our goal is for every patient to return home immediately after surgery, some patients may transfer to a rehabilitation hospital for continued therapy, while others may continue their recovery at home with the help of in-home physical therapy or nursing visits.
